Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park is more than a community highlight. With a playground for children, running trails and tennis courts for the athletic and walking tracks for the moms with strollers, it caters to a range of people. This project focused on encouraging interaction through design.

A new interactive outdoor installation for Brooklyn’s Fort Greene park

Folks at the park

For all the activities occurring at Fort Greene, there is a social aspect, and a distinct lack of a venue that combines mingling with activity.

Planning it out

Using the circular space as a starting point, my concept focused on how people interacted with the space and how I might design ways to improve them.

Et voila

Squiggle is a whimsical, outdoor installation designed to encourage interaction by providing an adaptable venue with a stage for performances, loungers for relaxing and even benches for socializing.

As a performance space

Squiggle offers a stage for Fort Greene performers where the audience can gather in the center or sit on the surface of the installation.

As a lounge space

Squiggle functions as a bench and a lounger offering the members of Fort Greene a spot to socialize and relax.

Takeaways

Creating optimal experiences for users is key. A successful project focuses on the needs of its users, and is designed in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders.
